Seedsaving for Beginners and Equinox Seed Swap Class

All the foods we eat came from somewhere and the seed is where it all begins. Join Clint Freund of Cultivating the Commons to explore this lost relationship and find out more about the plants we love in our gardens! Learn the basics of seed saving from your home garden or farm. Clint will cover all aspects including seed selection, growing plants, seed collection, and storage. Bring your questions regarding plants from which you would like to save seed. Learn how to stomp (wear your tennis shoes!) and winnow seed. After class, we’ll have a seed swap and share a potluck meal to celebrate seeds and the spring equinox. Wear comfortable shoes and ideas about your favorite garden vegetable you love to eat and grow.

Instructor Bio: Clint Freund got into plants and farming early in life. Growing up on a gregarious dairy farm was no joke! He enjoyed the country living, close contact with nature and the abundance of work and care that went into producing food. That continued later in life as he fell into Organic Farming, working on several vegetable farms and eventually diving into seed saving at Meadowlark Hearth. The last ten years have been spent exploring that relationship with food, crops and seeds. He mostly grow contract seed for companies like Baker’s Creek and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They offer their own varieties and heirlooms on the web.
